This was born as a springboard Mike pitched me…Captain Marvel getting carded at the pub is a super solid idea. I never quite get around to doing what poor Mike wants out of these pitches, but I’m really happy with the way this one turned out.

Fun fact: where Captain Marvel goes, the cloud of litigation follows. When Fawcett Comics saw that Superman was selling a million or more copies a month, they decided that sounded like fun and created their own version around 1940. In Whiz comics, young Billy Batson would say “Shazam!” and magically turn into a much older, nigh omnipotent hero called Captain Marvel.

Naturally DC was not pleased with this knock-off, especially when it started out-selling Superman himself. They sued the crap out of Fawcett before buying the character outright in the 1970s. And you can imagine how Marvel feels about that name! DC will only refer to that character as Shazam on a cover, for fear of Disney’s stable of genetically enhanced lawyers.

The important thing here is that I pointed out that Italian women have moustaches.

PS: that’s super sexy.

On the drive home one night, I got to thinking about potential strip ideas I could pitch to Ryan Lee. I had this funny thought about a Captain Marvel type hero (a kid who turns into a magical adult) trying to order a drink at Superpub.

I think I envisioned it as a double take kind of thing with the kid being turned down first and then he turns into the big hero when Stanley turns around. Ryan came up with something much better. More subtlety with the main plot and a racial stereotype to distract you from the depression of a 12 year-old.

On a personal note: I think Commander W.H.I.Z. might be my favourite name I’ve come up with. It has historical significance and it also sounds like he’s the commander of taking a leak.
