Nose War might be the stupidest thing I’ve ever written, and I kinda love it. I fought with myself for a bit before I sent this to Mike, because it’s just too ridiculous. But every time I pictured this in my head, I would giggle like an idiot. That’s a good result for a gag strip.
I got a good laugh at the finished product, too…I think it’s mostly the look on Extensible Man’s face in the last panel. I sort of look at this one as a little present to me, because Mike would have been justified in passing on the script. As always, the reader will decide, but I think it turned into a quirky little gem.

Trying to figure out how the nose war got started makes this one hilarious for me. The brilliant part is Ryan leaving it up to you to fill in that part of the story. I imagine a conversation in which Red O’Richards is bragging up his stretching power within ear-shot of Extensible Man. I don’t even know how that conversation would play out, but I know it would be funny as hell.
On the technical side, I’m still fudging with the colours. I think I’m settling on the gradient background as opposed to the hard line dividing dark from light. I’ve also found a really quick cheat for adding the shading to all of the figures. (Upon typing that last line, I think I might have come up with an even quicker one). The Zip is supposed to be running inot the fram on this one. I added the wine spilling out of the glass to indicate that but now I think it gets lost amid the reds of his uniform. In retrospect, I think I should have added a blur effect. But then, that might be too much photoshoppiness.
