Ryan Lee Blu-Ray Commentary
I wrote this script because I thought it would be funny if we had a Hawkgirl analog eat rocks like an actual bird. Hawks probably don’t even do that… but it doesn’t matter. What matters is that some idiot at the pub will freak out about it, and then I can publicly ridicule my friend Mike Turek, who actually does put ketchup on his steak like a degenerate heathen.I forgot I had even written the script until I saw the finished product on the website with the rest of y’all. The first thing I noticed was the pub-version of Hawkgirl, with her JLU-style tank top and some complimentary tropical hues. Really striking!
The next thing I did was skip to the bottom and see what he named her. (If you hadn’t noticed, Mike will always tell you the cast of characters below the strip) So, “crista” is latin for a bird’s tuft or the crest of a helmet. Can you even imagine a better name for an avian character with a warrior’s helmet? I lobbed “gastrolith” at Mike, and he blistered me back with some arcane Latin!
And that’s why Mike’s got more magic than Channing Tatum.
Monster Mike Blu-Ray Commentary
I didn’t come up with a name for our ‘Hawkgirl’ until I got to the colouring stage of this strip. One of the things I’ve been trying to do is to have a diverse cast of characters and I thought, what if I make this character Indian (like, actual Indian…from India). So I gave her some nice brown skin. The next thing I did was look up what the national bird of India is. It’s the Peacock. That’s where I got the costume palette. Did you know that the Latin term for Peacock is Cristatus? Bingo. Meet Crista. She’s my new favourite patron of Superpub.Kudos to Ryan for the back and forth between these two. His words make it easy to draw this stuff.
