Ryan Lee Blu-Ray Commentary
I wrote this strip on the heels of Netflix releasing House of Cards Season 2. It seemed like the prevailing attitude was “If you didn’t watch this in one night, don’t even talk to me, wuss.” Then I would stop talking to them, because I don’t do that whole binge-watching deal. I’ve seen people jam 13 straight episodes of a Netflix show into their head…they don’t look healthy. So I was anticipating folks doing similar things when Daredevil got released. I was not disappointed.

I had to throw in the Close Encounters reference.Watching Richard Dreyfuss build things out of his mashed potatoes was one of the singular moments burned into my developing consciousness. If you watch that movie now, it’s hard to believe how glacially-paced that thing is. Michael Bay would kill himself if forced to watch it.

The hardest part for me is always the names, I’m exceptionally bad at it. I think for Daredevil, I sent Mike something really embarrassing like “I want to call him demonic guy with rosy hue, is that too long?” Then Mike just pops out a perfect little slice of alliteration that follows the syllabic syncopation and everything. Boom! Like a boss. That’s our Mike!

Monster Mike Blu-Ray Commentary

This comic strip was inked while I sat at the Superpub booth at East Coast Comic Expo in Moncton this past Saturday. I had a lull in traffic by my table while the costume competition was going on and it got me thinking that I’d love to see someone come to a convention or expo dressed as a Superpub character. There, I’ve said it. Now we just wait…

Whenever I settle in with the mind to draw one of these, I go into my Gmail and do a combo search for “Ryan Lee” and “Superpub”. That usually brings up all the e-mails that Ryan has sent with scripts in them. When I found this one, it was next in the queue. As I read, I came to this line:

If you like the bit, I figure we launch this one right around the time Netflix drops an entire season of Daredevil on us at once.

…Awesome. Only a few months late it seems. I think it still works but my apologies go to Ryan. This would have hit a lot bigger if I had been on the ball.

Also at ECCE, I met a guy named Greg who said he loved the comic. He bought a few prints from me and like a newbie, I forgot to ask if he wanted anything signed (I’m not used to being famous yet, I guess). Greg, this one is for you, buddy. Next time I see you, I will sign anything you want. Well, almost anything.
